Stuart Koperweis and His Wife Elizabeth

Stuart Z. Koperweis brings an especially valuable combination of public and private sector experiences from which Asbury Park may gain considerable benefit: He has engineered the remarkable growth of a major economic development corporation and played a leading role in the renaissance of New Jersey’s second largest city.

Stuart Z. Koperweis began a marketing career while still pursuing his undergraduate education at C.W. Post College in New York. He went on to receive a graduate degree in International Affairs and Economic Development from American University in Washington, D. C., while working on Capitol Hill as a legislative aide to a mid-western congressman.

In 1993, with the election of a new Mayor in Jersey City, Mr. Koperweis joined the administration as the chief-of- staff. The following year, he moved to the Economic Development Corporation as president. While there he was responsible for creating $55 million in public sector development projects, leveraging this into $2 billion in private sector investments, creating 35,000 new jobs; of which 66% in the retail sector were for local residents.

In 2000, Stuart and his wife decided to move to our wonderful Historic Asbury Park with their three children. Quickly recognizing the vast potential and under-utilized assets of Asbury Park he took on the challenge of reinvigorating the Greater Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce as Executive Director, from 2002 - 2004. During his tenure he was able to increase membership by 39% and net revenues by 79%, and brought back the famed Carousel Awards Dinner. Also, in 2002 Stuart started his own consulting firm assisting municipalities across the state with urban development and progressive economic incentive programs – from Special Improvement Districts to Urban Enterprise Zones, Economic Development Corporations and grant writing. He is currently working as a consultant with, among others, the Townships of Bloomfield, Teaneck and Merchantville. Additionally he is an adjunct professor at Farleigh Dickinson University, teaching courses on entrepreneurial government and Marketing for non-profits.

Stuart Z. Koperweis is an active member of several local and national charitable, religious, and professional organizations, including the renowned National Conference for Community and Justice and Downtown New Jersey. He was a founding trustee and a vice-president of the board for the Learning Community Charter School in Jersey City. He also served as a member of the Planning Board and Cultural Affairs Committee.
